Makaila holds a Bachelor's degree in Global Studies with a concentration in Peace and Conflict Studies in the Americas, along with a minor in Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley. Beyond her professional pursuits, Makaila is deeply committed to social causes, volunteering with organizations focused on criminal justice reform. Currently, she is actively involved with Inside Books Project in Austin, TX, facilitating the distribution of free literature to incarcerated individuals in Texas while advocating for public awareness of incarceration-related issues. Additionally, Makaila channels her creativity as a freelance writer, artist, and photographer, with expertise in music and live events.
